Dornier Do X | The History Of The Giant 12-Engine Flying Ship
If you'd like to donate towards the Do X reconstruction project, please do so here: www.do-x-vision.de/en/give-a-boost-to-the-do-x/
The mighty Dornier Do X is the focus of today's video. Not only are we going to explore its history, but we will also learn about a project that is bringing this huge flying ship back to life. I'd like to extend a big thank you to Peter Kielhorn for speaking with me about the Do X Reconstruction Project!

This is extremely interesting. For the engineering-oriented folks out there, how come it is so stable in a hover? I'd thing it'd be the same as a drone, inherently unstable and in need of processing power to constantly fine tune its control surfaces and maintain its stability

Thoroughly enjoyed this video! And I have to add that I agree with all your choices of good looking British aircraft. But I have to say that you needed a top 12 or more! Amongst the missing for me is the Gloster Javelin! I am particularly pleased that you included the Hawker Hunter. My father was the aerodynamicist of the Sea Hawk through to the Hunter under Sydney Camm . You say that the Hunter was designed by Camm, but it would be fairer to say that it was designed by the group of aeronautical engineers that he gathered around him and drove forward. Entering the jet age, Camm’s design skills were becoming out of date so he concentrated on Man management instead. He could be quite a hard task master in a way that would probably be described as, shall we say, uncompromising, and difficult to get away with nowadays but he clearly motivated his work force and inspired loyalty amongst them. I think the great achievement of Camm’s team was that they designed, developed, and produced effective aircraft where even the rest of the world failed, the P1127 and Harrier are classic examples of this. Nobody else in the world managed a comparable and practical VTOL until the F35 40 years later! There was attention strongly paid to the practical nature of design and front line operation in developing only one or two features from previously successful aircraft to the next aircraft. In the 1940’s and 50’s much of aeroplane design was still by necessity an art rather than the strong and precise engineering of today, with computer modelling and such. You can see Camm’s stylistic influence on designs from the 1930’s through to the 50’s in his aircraft “An aircraft that looks right will fly right!” is the common saying. Have a look at the development of the Sea Fury through the P1052 and P1083 to the Hunter. One story my Father told me was how Camm would walk through the drawing office in the morning, having a look at the drawings. If he didn’t like something he would simply get his pencil out and run it under the drawing on the board, ripping it in two! Not a criticism of the video but more just to show I was awake. At 13:26 you mention the Spitfire fighter bomber, but the video shows a Hurricane upon close inspection. Then at 16:48 whilst still talking about the Hunter you show a picture of the P1083 which was the predecessor prototype of the Hunter, being a Sea Hawk with swept wings and swept tail plane. Cheers and thanks for this video!

But why did they just stop building the nose and then thought it would be a clean aerodynamic thing if we just bolt the engine in the middle of the gash we left in the nose. They must have had some sort of vage idea about aerodynamics.

People can talk all they like about top speed, engine power, gunfire or 'rugged' construction _(sic)._ Against the Zeroes over New Guinea, the P-40 simply did not have enough advantages for anyone to claim that one technical aspect or another got them over the line. The Kittyhawks did well when they were well led. The best example of this was John Jackson leading RAAF 75 Squadron. Nearly all of his pilots had no combat experience, no formation flying experience and most had never even fired their guns by the time they got to their first combat. Even their radios did not work properly. Yet this motley bunch took pieces off the Japanese on a regular basis, giving at least as good as they got. Some of them, despite the odds, even became aces in what almost amounted to a suicidal campaign against the highly experienced and very combat savvy Japanese. Opinion was divided over the flight characteristics - some liked the Kittyhawk, while others dreamed of Spitfires. Those with no experience had no benchmark with which to compare. In the end, the RAAF used it well in the Defence of Port Moresby and the Battle of Milne bay, three months later. This had little to do with using the aircraft to best advantage, since, as I previously said, it didn't have enough technical advantages to match it with a Zero. Instead, John Jackson was an aggressive squadron commander who was smart enough to guess Japanese tactics and intentions and go after them before they got a chance to attack. FWIW, the Kittyhawk is well remembered in Australia.

The p 40 had a two stage supercharger as compared to the three stage of the Spit and mustang, if Allison had a better supercharger it would have ruled. It was actually a better engine. This is the only reason the p40 was surpassed. It was a great plane

The basic idea to continue using flying boats after the war was so last week. Did they really not notice that every single half flat area of England was occupied by an airbase after 1943. And this was not just England. It was the same all over the world. So the reason to use the ocean to land was blown right out the door.
